Major Parts Of The Respiratory System

The Major Parts Of The Respiratory System

Now that we have covered the organs in the Respiratory System it is time to move on to the MAJOR PARTS in the Respiratory System. Don't worry we are almost done with learning about the System just hang in there.

03/30/13 - Sinuses

Sinuses is another cavity within a bone or other tissue. Most are found in the bones of the face and it connects with the nasal cavities. Sinus is a connected system of hollow cavities in the skull. Largest sinus cavities are around an inch across; others are smaller. As you see in this picture theres also....Maxillary Sinus, Ethmoid Sinuses, Sphenoid Sinus & Frontal Sinus and it is all around the face. Sinuses help humidify the air we breathe in and another is that they enhance our voices.

03/30/13 - Bronchial Tube

Bronchial tubes is where the air passes through your lungs. When you breathe air in, it passes from your nose or mouth, through the larynx and into the trachea or wind pipe. It seems to me that without the bronchial tube we wouldn't be able to breathe? or air just wouldn't be able to pass through?

03/30/13 - Alveoli/Bronchiole

As you see in the picture the Alveoli looks like grapes or little sacs where gas exchange (oxygen and carbon dioxide) takes place in our lungs. When you breathe out, body delivers carbon dioxide to the alveoli, and you release it in your exhalation. When you breathe in, oxygen fills the alveoli and then enters the blood, so it can be delivered to the rest of the body.

Sorry A Couple More To Go Then You Are All Done

Now that we're done covering the major parts. Lets end it by finding out the Systems Protective Mechanisms. I won't lie i searched this up on the internet.

03/31/13 - Nasal Hairs

The large airborne particles are trapped in the nasal hairs which stretch across the nares. The nasal hairs are located in your nose as if you didn't know.

03/31/13 - Mucus Production

The respiratory tract above the bronchioles is lined with epithelium, which secretes thick, sticky mucas.  This waterproofs the inside of the respiratory system and provides a protective barrier against any irritants.

03/31/13 - Cilia

These are minute hair-like projections of the epithelium lining along the respiratory tract.  They move the mucas and trapped particles towards the throat.

03/31/13 - Sneezing

Protective reflex which is stimulated when the nasal mucosa is irritated.

03/31/13 - Coughing

Reflex mechanism for removing excess mucus or other irritants from the air passengers beyond the nose.

03/31/13 - Epithelial Lining

The filtration in the nasal cavity removes large particles, small particles are trapped as they pass through the bronchial tree and smaller particles are trapped in the mucus of the respiratory bronchioles or in the alveolar fluid where they are engulfed by the macrophages.  The debris are cleared out of the system by the coughing and sneezing reflexes.
